October 6, 2007. The Cortland State Red Dragons rolled to their third consecutive victory, defeating the Kean Cougars on the road 35-14. Ray Miles completed 16 of 24 passes for 277 yards, Keith Greene caught an 85-yard touchdown strike from Miles, and the Red Dragon defense limited Kean to only 239 yards total offense.

Cortland and Kean battled to a scoreless tie for much of the first half. Neither team was able to sustain a drive on offense, though each squad had scoring opportunities. Early in the second quarter with Kean driving, defensive tackle Lou Crispo came up big for Cortland stopping Kean running back Jason Liberti for no gain on 3rd-and-2 from the Cortland 35-yard line.

Late in the half Mike Attanasio sacked Cougars quarterback A.J. Roque at the Kean 12-yard line on third down. With 1:39 remaining in the half, Cortland called timeout to stop the clock. After a Roque punt and a short return from Jeff Beck, Cortland took possession at the Cougars 39-yard line.

After an incomplete pass, Ray Miles connected with Wayne Wheeler on a deep sideline route. Wheeler made a spectacular leaping catch at the Kean 16-yard line to put Cortland into the red zone. On second down, Miles scrambled away from Kean pressure and found a seam up the center of the field. Miles broke a tackle and ran 16 yards into the end zone for the game's first points. Cortland took a 7-0 lead into the break.

Cortland dominated after half-time. The Cortland defense forced Kean into a 3-and-out series to start the half. Will Loeb broke a 16 yard punt return to the Kean 40-yard line. Keith Greene caught a key 13-yard pass from Miles on third down to keep the drive alive. Next Miles found Mile Lake for 14 yards inside the Kean 15-yard line.

The offensive line opened up a huge hole in the middle of the field, and Andrew Giuliano ran the football to the Kean 5-yard line. Giuliano ended the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to put Cortland ahead 14-0.

On the next Kean possession, Ricky Case intercepted Roque at the Cortland 38-yard line and returned the ball 24 yards to the Cougars 38-yard line. Cortland capitalized with a 11-yard touchdown pass from Miles to Zacc Guaragno. Matthew Mintz kicked the extra point to give Cortland a 21-0 lead. In doing so, Mintz tied George Oostmeyer's school record 67 consecutive extra points made.

On Cortland's next possession, Miles looked to throw deep on his first play from scrimmage. Keith Greene broke behind the secondary up the left sideline. A desperate Kean defender grabbed Greene by the shirt, drawing a flag. But Greene broke away unhindered and Miles hit him in stride for an 85-yard touchdown pass. Greene's 85-yard touchdown reception set a new school record, breaking the 81-yard mark set by Earl Rogers in 1970. Matthew Mintz added the extra point to break Oostmeyer's school record.

Late in the fourth quarter, Jeff Beck cemented a Cortland victory with an interception of Roque. It was Beck's 14th career interception, breaking the all-time school record for interceptions held by Stef Sair.

The Cortland victory was overwhelming. The offensive line had a strong afternoon, allowing only 1 sack of Miles. With plenty of time, Miles was able to spread the ball to several different receivers and keep Kean on its heels. The Cortland defense was strong again, yielding only 2 touchdowns late in the fourth quarter with the game well in hand and several backups seeing action. The Red Dragons improved to 4-1 overall, and 3-0 in the NJAC.

The road gets rougher from this point out. After a home game with high scoring West Conn next weekend, the Red Dragons finish with Montclair, TCNJ, Rowan, and Ithaca.
