November 17, 2007.
The Cortland State Red Dragons defeated The Union College Dutchmen 23-7, to
capture the ECAC Northeast Bowl. The victory brought Cortland's final record
to 8-3 in 2007. Union fell to 5-5.
Defensive End Ben Nagle was named the MVP for the game. Nagle had 4 sacks and

The Cortland defense provided the game's first big stop. Early in the first
quarter Union recovered a fumble at the Cortland 32-yard line. On fourth down
at the Cortland 24-yard line, Red Dragons Vinny Aiello and Brian Haas
combined to stop Dutchmen running back Chris Coney for no gain. The ball was
turned over on downs, and the Cortland offense quickly took advantage.
Ray Miles passed to sophomore Wayne Wheeler for 18 yards. Two plays later
Andrew Giuliano busted a run for 12 yards into Union territory. Another Miles
to Wheeler hook up went for 16 yards. Matt Mintz kicked a 35-yard field goal
to give Cortland a 7-3 lead.
In the second quarter the Dutchmen took advantage of a Miles interception at
the Cortland 35-yard line. Quarterback Jared Gourrier avoided a third down
sack and scrambled 14 yards to the Cortland 21-yard line. A Gourrier to
Zach Tillo pass play for 12 yards got Union to the 14-yard line. The drive
ended with Josh McKelligan catching a 4-yard pass from Gourrier to put Union
ahead 7-3.
On Cortland's next possession Ray Miles delivered a deep pass to tight end
Michael Zielinksi for 41-yards to the Union 20-yard line. The pass play
set up a 26-yard field goal by Mintz to draw Cortland within 7-6. On the
first play of the next Union possession, Gourrier fumbled the football. Kyle
Pierce recovered the ball for Cortland at the Union 29-yard line. A key 24-yard
reception and run by Shane Arce got Cortland a first down at the Union 11-yard
line. After a false start penalty, Miles completed a 13-yard strike to Eric
Hajnos at the 2-yard line. Andrew Giuliano rushed 2 yards over right end for
the touchdown, giving Cortland a 13-7 lead at half-time.
The defenses controlled the third quarter with neither team able to put
points on the board. Early in the fourth quarter, new Dutchmen quarterback
Andy Catellier hit receiver Andrew Reigle on a crossing pattern for 10 yards.
Brian Haas hit Reigle at the 36-yard line, causing a fumble. Ricky Case grabbed
the football for Cortland and returned it to the Union 30-yard line. A 17-yard
rush by Andrew Giuliano set up another field goal by Mintz, to build Cortland's
lead to 16-7. The field goal conversion was the twelfth of the season for Mintz,
tying his own school record.
Late in the fourth quarter Cortland cemented the game on a 13-yard touchdown
pass from Miles to Zacc Guaragno. Cortland defeated Union 23-7 to capture the
ECAC Northeast Bowl.
Junior Andrew Giuliano rushed for 138 yards on 31 carries, and scored a
touchdown. Ray Miles went over the 2000 yard passing mark for the season.
10 different receivers caught passes from Miles on Saturday. Brian Haas became
the first freshman Red Dragon with greater than 100 tackles in a season since
defensive statistics began being tracked in 1979.
Haas finished his freshman
season with a team high 105 tackles. Senior safety Vinny Aiello broke up 3 passes
and had an interception. In all Cortland broke up 8 passes, with Greg Steward
