Cortland Destroys William Paterson 42-0
September 22, 2007.
The Cortland State Red Dragons steamrolled William Paterson 42-0 Saturday to improve to 2-0 in the
NJAC, and 3-1 overall. The Cortland State defense held William Paterson to only 108 yards of total
offense. Ray Miles threw for 226 yards and 3 touchdowns, and the Cortland offensive line controlled
a solid William Paterson Pioneers defense. The Cortland offensive line dominated scrimmage and
looked its strongest of the 2007 season.
Cortland jumped on top early in the first quarter. On its first drive, Eric Hajnos broke behind the
Pioneers secondary. Ray Miles hit Hajnos on a deep pass for 55 yards inside the William Paterson 10-yard
line. Dustin Bowser capped the drive with a 1-yard scoring run to put Cortland ahead 7-0. Bowser would add
a second touchdown run later in the first quarter to increase the lead to 14-0.
The defenses from each side controlled the game for the second quarter, before Ray Miles found a wide open
Keith Greene for a 25-yard touchdown pass. Matthew Mintz added the extra point, and Cortland took a 21-0 lead
into the locker room.
Late in the third quarter Miles threw complete to Zacc Guaragno. Guaragno stiff-armed a defender and raced
down the left sideline for a 63-yard touchdown reception. The touchdown increased the lead to 28-0 for Cortland,
and effectively ended any hopes for a William Paterson comeback.
The fourth quarter belonged to the Cortland offensive line. The physical play of the front 5 wore down the Pioneers,
and led to 2 long scoring drives. After driving down the field with a mix of pass and run, Miles threw his third
touchdown pass of the game. Dave Fregelette came open on the right sideline near the goal line, caught the pass, and hit
the pilon for the touchdown.
Freshman Will Loeb put the final points on the board for Cortland. A 12-play 65-yard drive ended on a Loeb 11-yard run
for a touchdown. Loeb took the draw play on third-and-long, sprinting over the left side of the line.
It was a resounding victory for Cortland. The Red Dragons played a solid game on both sides of the football. Besides
holding William Paterson to only 108 yards total offense, the defense slammed the Pioneers with 7 quarterback sacks.
Pioneer quarterback Dan Lamego completed 4 of 13 passes for only 26 yards. Jim Smith and Mike Attanasio each had 2 sacks
for Cortland. Chris Gagstetter and Matt Berman picked off Lamego passes.
Cortland rolled up 407 yards offensively, and had its best rushing game since the opening victory over Morrisville. Dustin
Bowser led the way with 72 yards on the ground, averaging 4.8 yards per carry. Andrew Giuliano, Cory Russell, and Will
Loeb combined for 19 carries for 99 yards.
The Red Dragons return to New Jersey next Saturday to face Kean University, in a key mid season test for both teams.
