Cortland Wins Shootout at Brockport

November 7, 2009. The SUNY Cortland Red Dragons rallied from a 35-28 deficit to win a wild shootout at Brockport 56-42. The 98 points scored between the two teams set a new record for total points scored in a Cortland game.

Cortland scored on the first play from scrimmage on an 80-yard bomb pass from Alex Smith to Eric Hajnos. Cortland took a 21-7 lead after the first quarter, but saw that lead evaporate into a 35-28 deficit by half-time. A 51-yard touchdown run by Dom Sair opened the scoring in the third quarter to tie the game at 35-35. Smith then connected with Hajnos for two more touchdown passes, the first a 24-yard score midway through the third quarter, the latter a short scoring throw at the end of the third quarter. Cortland took a 49-35 lead into the fourth quarter, where Dom Sair iced the game late. Sair broke a 44-yard run down to the Brockport 1-yard line. Sair rushed for a touchdown on the next play to give Cortland a commanding 56-35 lead. Brockport added a late touchdown to end the scoring at 56-42.

Eric Hajnos caught 12 passes for 220 yards and three touchdowns. His three receiving touchdowns in one game tied a school record. Hajnos also became only the fourth Red Dragon to ever eclipse 200 yards receiving in a single game. Dom Sair continued to emerge as a dominant force on the ground, rushing for 155 yards on 18 carries for a 8.2 yards per carry average. Alex Smith set a career high with 324 yards passing, while tossing four touchdown passes.

The Red Dragons offensive line controlled scrimmage throughout, pacing a 198-yard team rushing attack and not allowing a sack. The Cortland offense rolled up 522 yards of total offense.

The Cortland defense struggled uncharacteristically in yielding 492 yards to Brockport. However the Cortland defense allowed only seven points after half-time adjustments, and pressured Brockport quarterback Jake Graci throughout the second half. Cortland finished with seven team sacks, Evan Wyler and Cody Allen leading the way with two each. Cody Allen had 18 tackles, nine solo. Will Schroeder had 15 tackles and an interception, while Bobby Somerville broke up two passes and added 10 tackles.

Cortland ran its record to 7-2 overall and in the NJAC. Brockport fell to 3-6 overall and 2-6 in the NJAC. Both teams have rivalry games next week. Brockport plays the I-90 Bowl against Buffalo State, while Cortland challenges Ithaca for the Cortaca Jug at Butterfield Stadium in Ithaca.
