Cortland Pounds Buffalo State 42-13
October 3, 2009. The SUNY Cortland Red Dragons improved to 3-1 with a 42-13 victory at Buffalo State. Cortland dominated its first road trip of 2009 in a game delayed for nearly an hour by lightning.
Junior fullback Dom Sair rushed for four touchdowns, his most as a Red Dragon. The SUNY Cortland defense held the Buffalo State Bengals to a mere seven first downs and 150 total yards.
Junior defensive end Bobby Somerville led the way with nine tackles, four solo and a sack. Somerville also returned a fumble nine yards for a touchdown. Brian Wiley added two sacks and D.J. Romano had seven tackles and an interception.
The Cortland offense struggled early, and committed four turnovers against Buffalo State to make the score closer than it should have been. But as the game wore on, the offensive line wore down the Bengals and the offense played error free football. Cortland amassed 242 yards rushing, a season high. Dom Sair frequently lined up in the tailback position with Bill Smith at fullback. The combination gave Cortland a power running combo which dictated the offense in the second half.
Buffalo State fell to 1-2 in the NJAC, and 1-3 overall. SUNY Cortland travels to Montclair, New Jersey next Saturday to face the Montclair State Red Hawks. Montclair State is undefeated in the NJAC.
