Kean Stops Dragons 24-10
September 26, 2009. The Kean University Cougars defeated SUNY Cortland 24-10 Saturday. It was the first time in 14 meetings Kean has defeated Cortland.
The Cougars defense held the Cortland offense in check for most of the game, limiting Cortland to only 251 total yards. Kean quarterback Tom D'Ambrisi kept the aggressive Cortland defense off balance, completing 14-of-21 passes for 136 yards and a touchdown. D'Ambrisi also rushed for 64 yards and two more touchdowns.
First time starting quarterback Hudson Woodward showed an accurate arm and mobility, but also fell victim to some rookie mistakes. Woodward passed for 183 yards and a touchdown, but also threw 3 interceptions. Tight End Brian Haber caught 4 passes for 58 yards and a touchdown. Wayne Wheeler had 4 receptions for 64 yards.
Chris Hanlon led the Red Dragons with 8 tackles. Bobby Somerville had 7 tackles, a sack, 2 tackles in the backfield, and forced a fumble. Safety Joe Lopez intercepted a D'Ambrisi pass. But Cortland as a team struggled to pressure the Kean quarterback, gaining only 1 sack and few hurries.
Kean remains undefeated in the NJAC with a 2-0 record. Cortland falls to 1-1 in NJAC play. Both teams are 2-1 overall on the early season. The loss was Cortland's first in the NJAC since a 2007 defeat at TCNJ.
